ALERT: Help Save Land in LEH and Tuckerton

Please write or email Congress to urge that money be appropriated for acquisition of the “Tuckerton Creek” property along Route 539 between Tuckerton and the Garden State Parkway in Little Egg Harbor Township.
ALERT: Help conserve land in southern Ocean County.

New Jersey is eligible for federal funding for land acquisition from the:

Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program

These funds could be used to acquire 800 acres along 539 (North Green Street) between Tuckerton and the Garden State Parkway.

Congressional Committees are now considering how these funds will be allocated among the eligible states. It is important that you let your representatives in Congress know that protecting natural land on the coastal plain is a priority for you in the expenditure of your tax dollars.

All three of these legislators have solid records with regard to land acquisition funding. Please thank them for their work in the past and urge them to work vigorously for maximum funding from the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program so that threatened lands such as the undeveloped “Tuckerton Creek property” along Route 539 in Little Egg Harbor can be purchased for conservation.

Some background: This wooded land has been repeatedly threatened with development. A NASCAR site was proposed. An estimated 250 residences are currently being considered. Recently Save Barnegat Bay, in alliance with other groups and citizens of Little Egg Harbor and Tuckerton, persuaded LEH officials to withdraw their proposal to sewer Route 539, which would have allowed this area to be intensively developed. A map of this area and description of this effort may be seen online at online.
