HELP SAVE HORSESHOE CRABS

If you have seen any horseshoe crabs spawning during May or June, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife wants to know when, where, at what tide, and how many. Phone 1-877-TAG-CRAB (1-877-824-2722).

In May 2001 Save Barnegat Bay volunteers noticed a pair at our Lavallette bay beach cleanup. We phoned in the information. Doing so helps the Department begin to gather data on where habitat in need of protection may be located. Since that time others have noticed horseshoe crabs spawning at the Lavallette bay beach and in Normandy Beach.

High tides on the days and nights around full and new moons are peak spawning times.

Fill out the online Horseshoe Crab Spawning Identification Form from NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife.
